llanfairfechan Blue Moon

llanfairfechan Blue Moon

Monday morning, the rain is coming down, it’s cold and windy and it’s the start of the working week….think I’ll go back to bed!

Hopefully this shot from Penmon looking towards llanfairfechan on the North Wales coast will help chill you out. It was a great full moon and the graduated filters increased the sultry blue tint cast across the sea and sky with a hint of the reflective sunset from behind me hitting the sky and mountains.

As Im often asked how I produce these types of shots I’ll give you the EXIF data.

First and most important, BEING THERE!

Canon 1DS Mark III

EF16-35mm f/2.8L USM

ISO 100

f/22.0

25 secs

35.0 mm

Lee .9 ND Soft Grad

Lee .6 ND Glass

Manfrotto Tripod, Muck Boot Artic Wellies and a smug grin (doing what I love)

In Photoshop Raw I level the shot to straighten the  horizon, adjust the exposure, recovery and saturation, then open into Photoshop CS5 where I spend  time removing spray and dust spots from the shot, my biggest bugbear on photos, I hate seeing them, I do this at 400% image size to ensure the shot is totally clean, sad I know, then it’s just a resize and save for web apps etc etc. I enjoy this part as much as taking the shot, I feel the same emotions in front of my Mac that I do standing in the sea taking the shot…double the pleasure.

now you know what I use and how I do it and hopefully a little insight into why.

Have a great week

Penmon Lighthouse Sunset

Penmon Lighthouse Sunset

It’s Sunday and I thought I’d start the week off with this sunset form Penmon, The Penmon lighthouse also known as Trwyn Du Lighthouse was one of the later lighthouses to be constructed in this area, and was, like many, built after a major loss of life nearby. It marks some rocks that are on the end of land going out towards Puffin Island (Shots Later) but also marks the north entrance to the Menai Straits.

We went down for a sunset shoot and the place was packed with fishermen, school trips, camper vans ready for a sleep over, oh and 2 photographers, me been one of them the other guy a South African, don’t think he’d made a special journey though!.

Anyway this is the first of many from this location, some great moon shots to follow viewing towards llanfairfechan from Penmon.

This shot dedicated to Rachel and Nick, lovers of this area, meee tooo!

I wont bore you with cut and paste blogs on history etc, google  Penmon Lighthouse, the best info  I found was HERE

Safe Pasage

Safe Passage

Last post until I get back from Wales so I thought I’d leave you with this idyllic sunset at Anglesey, bit of a dedication here for a friend Alan who recently lost his best friend and instead of sending flowers they donated to  the Woodland Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, 2 fantastic organisation, so God bless him and remember the Sun comes up too.

Well in preparation for our trip I cleaned the car  and it threw it down, then I washed the caravan and it was a torrential downpour, I  daren’t cut the grass for fear of tsunami or earthquake….!

Wellies and waterproofs at the ready, Stormy has packed her little nap sack, chews, treats and pooh bags neatly tidied away, please let the sunshine for once, I have never set off and made it to Wales with a clean dry car, maybe OCD but I do like a clean car.

Have a great week all

Moonfleet Bay

Moonfleet Bay 2

Another from Wales, failed in getting 30 shots ready for this weekend managed 12, needs must an all, anyway back down Saturday  a

to complete the Wales shoot for this years seascape exhibition material. I was mesmerised by the rock in the foreground, I spent ages shooting round it from every angle, it seemed so out of place especially as it was so bright compared to the other rocks. My wellires got filled so i had to retreat, I’ll get it this weekend again I hope.

Managed my shoot at the care home today, such a sad scene, I cant believe how we get when we have dementia, I was gutted…..the care home though is a lovely place and the staff deserve a gold medal for their patience and care…booked my place already!

More later

Moonfleet Bay Portrait

Moonfleet Bay Portrait

Second of my Moonfleet Bay series, and yes it’s a portrait….I do them from time to time. It’s not that I don’t like them it’s just that I am lazy and get carried away with the moment then can’t be bothered to explore the portrait possibilities, I’ll try and do more.

Went to the Peaks last night, Higger, was a beautiful night but the sky didn’t deliver the anticipated results and was covered with con trails, the sun did do a red revenge but wasn’t nearly as good as the night before, may put a shot up later.

Back out again tomorrow

have a great week ahead all

Moonfleet Bay

Moonfleet Bay

Happy Sunday all

first of a series titled “Moonfleet Bay”, all shots taken at the end of a long days shoot on Anglesey with still waters and the crescent  moon adding to the scene. There was just enough remnants of the days sun to cast a pinky glow to the west.

6 days and we’ll be there again, should complete my summer shoot there then and have enough for my next vid. Great news is that Pendragon have agreed for me to use one of their track for this, thanks to Rachel and Nick….it’ll be a cracker.

Sunset in The Peaks later the sun should be deep and red so hoping for a good one tonight.

BBQ at sis’s later too, hope Stormy behaves, she’s a little partial to burgers..lol so am I!

Lets hope this week brings us all good health fun

Naburn Butterfly

Naburn Butterfly

Just had a lovely day at Naburn in North Yorkshire, its an idyllic little village with this lock being a great focal point for a visit, i managed as I do to scramble across the lock gates and kneel down for this shot of a pleasure cruiser approaching the lock. Only when I looked closely at the composition did I realise its pretty much like a butterfly……or do I need help?

weather was lovely and we had a long chat with a narrow boat owner who lives on it and travels the British waterways all year round, lucky things..

Stormy enjoyed it too though it was a little warm for her

Peaks tomorrow, cant wait, either daytime Dovedale or Sunset Ladybower/Higger….will see how my Saturday curry feels..lol

Enjoy the weekend all, Wales next Saturday

Beddgelert

Quick blog today, got loads to do, Both shots taken at Beddgelert a beautiful little village in Snowdonia. The story goes……

“In the 13th century Llewelyn, prince of North Wales, had a palace at Beddgelert. One day he went hunting without Gelert, “The Faithful Hound”, who was unaccountably absent. On Llewelyn’s return the truant, stained and smeared with blood, joyfully sprang to meet his master. The prince alarmed hastened to find his son, and saw the infant’s cot empty, the bedclothes and floor covered with blood.

The frantic father plunged his sword into the hound’s side, thinking it had killed his heir. The dog’s dying yell was answered by a child’s cry. Llewelyn searched and discovered his boy unharmed, but near by lay the body of a mighty wolf which Gelert had slain.

The prince filled with remorse is said never to have smiled again. He buried Gelert here”.

Town Beach Sunset

Town Beach Sunset

So many images and not enough time to get them on the site……

dedicating today to getting 10 images processed and up, need to chase up framers for sales been sent, got deliveries coming, sorting workshop notes out, Stormy’s long walk, gym and to top it all…..guess which idiot put petrol in a diesel car yesterday …yup 1st time I ever done something so stupid.

Mind you the RAC wanted £200 plus but my mate owns a garage and he flushed the system for £20, so could have been worse, saying that I lost £77 worth of petrol/diesel mix ..a small price to pay saying it could have killed my car…. I can laugh about it now but I’m sure the staff and customers at Morrisons Petrol Station haven’t heard language like mine at that time in a morning!

Town Beach Sunset,  as the sea swirls and mixes the sand in its waves the sun retreats casting a beautiful orange glow across the bay.

ahh cant wait to be back there, 10 days and counting

Point To The Sun

Point To The Sun

I was going to enter a few competitions after last years success but after a conversation with Mr C the boss and my mentor of Landscape photography he said

“I reckon that winning competitions is a bit like passing exams, not necessarily the same as really knowing the subject, it’s more about knowing what is likely to please the examiners.” and lets face it you pay to enter, you fool!!

So guess what, my money is going to stay in my pocket this year and advance my technique instead. If a competition is for free then yes its worth having a go to win something maybe….only mugs pay to enter.

You see I’m finally learning …lol, leave the comps for the amateurs a famous photographer once said…how true

Today’s shot is as promised Rhosneigr, Anglesey, Broad Beach…well it is wide..lol

Never fails to amaze me that when the sea and light is as beautiful as this the locals aren’t down there sitting with a cup of tea watching the sun go down, When we finally move there my mission will be not to own a TV but to treat this view as my evenings entertainment, I know Stormy will approve.

Writing course notes today, it got to 35c in my studio yesterday, Stormy laid on the glass table on the decking to keep cool, she’s no fool then Jo came home and we got Stormy a little paddling pool..she loved it (Stormy that is) padding round with her over sized paws and blowing bubbles as she buried her head in the water..little things eh.

more to follow
