Another form Glencoe and the Glen Etive area.

I scrambled about for about an hour or so, “Finding The Shot”,  Jo and Stormy looking on disconcertingly as the midges swarmed and the rain fell in that fine but wettest of sprays… eventually she came and got the car keys and beat a hasty retreat back to warmth and comfort of the car…can’t blame her can you.

Being a landscape photographer is all about exploring your surroundings and hopefully presenting them in an scene where the customer (viewer) is presented with an image that gives just enough information but makes them inquisitive to want to see more.

Like this image if I turned 90 degrees to the right you would see traffic throbbing through the main arterial route into Glencoe and The North, it wouldn’t present nicely at all. Composition is king, after all it’s what attracts you to look at in the first place, shapes, colour, subject and an overall interesting scene.

I think this does all that and one I’m very proud of.

Steady day today, it is Wednesday after all, took Stormy out for a walk at 6:30am was cold but dry, hope it stays this way for the rest of the week, hopefully away this weekend for a shoot, thinking East Coast, Spurn Point for a sunrise.

Have a great day all

Sgorr na Ciche

Pap of Glencoe

Pap of Glencoe (Sgorr na Ciche) (742m / 2434 ft), Glencoe, Scotland

This is the first summit on the hiking route up to the famous (or notorious) Aonach Eagach ridge. Although not a munro, it commands a great view over Loch Leven, the narrows at Ballachulish, and north to Ben Nevis and the Mamores. And as you’re climbing from close to sea level, it’s as good a climb as many munros in the Scottish Highlands!

It’s amazing some days when you just roll out of bed open the curtains and see a site like this, I just jumped out of bed grabbed the camera, well I got dressed first (didn’t want to scare children etc) and took a few shots, it was over all too quickly…but what a sunrise.

Heavy freezing rain here today, glad I’m in doors with plenty to do, now how do you work the heating thingy?

Well it would have been rude not to!

Buachaille Etive Mòr

As the title suggest this is one of the most photographed locations in Scotland and Glencoe in particular, Buachaille Etive Mòr, pretty much a pyramid as viewed from the A82.

Other photographers would have you believe it’s a difficult place to get to, well it isn’t, its about 50m from the road side and there are tripod holes everywhere!. First of quite a few I did there, spent an hour trying every angle I could think of and standing in the rapid downstream. To the left is a 20′ drop of torrent so you have to be fairly steady on your feet when clambering about.

Particularly like the mist caressing “The Beuckle” as climbers call it!

One big thing to mention is the dreaded midges, I used a head net, you look a fool but it certainly works, since then I also discovered “Smidge” it’s about the best anti midge spray you can put on and it smells lovely too.

Wellies are a must too and I eventually managed to talk Jo into have some Muckboots so we went to Dumfries where I bought her some….she’s now a convert, gotta love em!

Ah well on with the week, busy doing prints for clients then it’s off to post my ABIPP Submission a whole 8 days early, I am very efficient aren’t I? Still gotta sort out my book print which should be sorted today too and I’ll have that in 10 days ready for December’s Assessment.

Have a great week all

Glen Etive – The Bike Shack

Glen Etive - Bike Shack

What a fantastic walk down the Glen we had, it’s some distance though and not for the fainthearted, carrying my kit too which always weighs a ton! my eyes light up when I saw this site, talk about the perfect composition laid out ready for you , I took loads of different angled shots then I noticed a black cloud above my head…..oh yes midges, millions of the little blighters and there’s me in a bloody T shirt, my arms started burning soon followed by my head, covered in bites….so nobody tell me this is an easy profession, I still have the scabs to prove it isn’t!
Still a bloody great walk and I love the shot

Have a great weekend

Sunset Moon

Sunset Moon

It’s Thursday already and I have so much to get ready, nearly got my ABIPP book ready, sending to printers this morning, portfolio complete and ready for the assessment 6th December, thing is you have to submit the electronic version 25th Oct then you cannot change this. Jo has been checking and double checking my spelling and grammar on my write ups, I was always terrible at spelling.

This shot is at Dumfries.  A wonderful sunset with large moon made all the more colourful with the use of 2 filters, a Lee  sunset and Heliopan polariser, this was then adjusted in PS cs5 with more saturation and a real good clean up to get the sea spray off the shot, may not look like it it but it was a gale force wind and quite a tricky spot to be in.

Anyway I love the colour of this, album art work???? maybe

Glencoe Mist – Loch Leven

Glencoe Mist - Loch Leven

Well here’s the first of many from my Scotland and Isle of Skye trip, there will be plenty of misty wet shots, no choice in the matter, never seen as much rain..lol

Loch Leven which has a caravan site part way down “Invercoe Caravan Site” is the ideal spot for a stop over or to explore the surrounding beauty of Glencoe, I must admit I would love to get back in the winter if anyone fancies it?

This shot was so calm and serene, I just sat on the Loch bank, super wellies on and the waters lapping gently round my legs. Using my skyblue filter to add the tint it took 26seconds of exposure and produced this mirror image of a beautiful place.

Off to argue with Apple now re my dodgy iPhone 4, it’s developed a fault and o2 insurance won’t cover it, they’ll be getting ditched when the contract runs out….do Vodafone buy out contracts?

many many more to follow

Back at Last

Dumfries Sunrise

Well we’re finally back from our Scotland trip, who could have imagined that when the UK seemed to be basking in a glorious summer we would be in the worst weather Scotland was experiencing in years, gale force winds and torrential rain and sleet for 13 days out of 14 with the exception of a couple of sunsets and 1 sunrise.

Mustn’t  grumble though as we did have a fantastic time and visited some wonderful places. Isle of Skye was a let down for me, although it does have some amazing coastline and the obvious rock sticking up it doesn’t do it for me, highlight was the walk to Neiste Point with Stormy and building a little rock tower in memory of loved ones past.

Also fell over a rock on a night time return and busted a finger and my knee, could have been worse as the tide was raging and I was so close to falling in, great shot to follow on this.

Anyway loads of shots to follow, this on was actually the last, taken on the morning of coming home and it was the only sunrise to make an appearance.

loads to follow, have a great Sunday

it’s nice to be dry for a change

Dam Stones

Dam Stones

hhhmmmm, Ok bad title but I’m that busy getting ready for Skye and my ABIPP accreditation  I think I fried my brain so it’s the first thing that came to me…

Not quite sure what the old stones were for but to the left of shot and further up the reservoir is the Derwent Dam scene of the Dambuster practice runs

Derwent reservoir was used by the RAF’s Dambusters to practise their low level flying techniques during 1943, in preparation for delivering Barnes Wallis’ famous ‘bouncing bombs’ to German dams. Located in the West Tower of the Derwent Valley Dam is the Derwent Dam (617 Squadron) Museum which houses a collection of memorabilia dedicated to the famous Dams Raid carried out by 617 “Dambusters” Squadron)”

Anyway back to the shot, as usual wellies on, knee deep in water/mud and sinking fast the symmetry was screening at me for a shot and I couldn’t refuse, I loved the reflection and lines of the stones, the dramatic skies adding to the composition, earphone pumping out some tunes, what a place.

Did some tutoring there Tuesday and even though it was dreary and damp it didn’t disappoint, Derwent always has an abundance of lines and reflections that always appear new to me. A place you have to keep returning to.

Stormy’s training class tonight, we had to stand in the naughty corner last week…..don’t ask!, needless to say I have been working hard training her this week so hopefully she will perform with perfection.

Have fun

Sutton Bank Cliff Top

Sutton Bank Cliff Top

A very quick upload today, one from Sutton Bank North Yorkshire

Standing very precariously on the edge of the cliff with what felt like a force 6 gale trying to carry you over to meet your maker some what earlier than anticipated may not be your ideal start to a day but believe me I was 4 inches from the edge and I never felt more alive, is this what adrenaline junkies get?  Jo was calling me back and a few other choice words too, bless her she didn’t want to drive home on her own!

Anyway it’s a beautiful part of Yorkshire and has to be on your tick list…..Oh and in the shot there is a glider,  look at the end of the cliff and up about a third into the sky.

Off on a shoot this morning and tutoring this afternoon in The Peaks, really looking forward to it. So is Stormy

Have a great day

Like The Setting Sun

Like The Setting Sun

Like the Setting Sun
We close the day when nights begun
Like the Setting Sun
We know when all’s been said and done
Let us brush aside our fears

Lyrics from “like The setting Sun” Pace Vendome one of my fav bands

Hey Hey it’s Friday at last, I have had a great morning my mate Glyn his wife Katia and beautiful daughter Kira are over from Germany, had a great catch up  and was soooo nice to see them. took some shots of Kira with Stormy. I’m amazed at how Kira at such a tender age can switch from German to English without a thought, boy has she got a great life ahead.

Got a lovely shoot tomorrow, a wetland moor and RSPB centre, Stormy is in for a treat it’s only 5km but should be full of wildlife  to film. Plus were looking at new caravans in the morning, we don’t need one ours is only a year old but my sister is buying one and it got us thinking about renewing next September maybe.

Sunset at Rhosneigr, when will we move there? will be back down end October/November to complete my season shots for a calendar.

Have a great weekend all
